Plus size yoga is so much more than a physical practice
Excited to be working on my new documentary about body positivity.
As a plus size women, my past experiences of yoga was standing in a gym rooms and large halls with slim women and feeling completely alone and disconnected. The primary focus of the class was exercise and after 15 minutes I would leave the class. I sadly believed that I was too fat to participate. No one took the time to explain that yoga was so much more than an exercise routine. No one ever mentioned that yoga was not about your weight or flexibility level. No one mentioned that yoga is so much more than a physical practice.
No one ever mentioned it at all.
The word 'Yoga' is derived from the Sanskrit root 'Yuj', meaning 'to join' 'to yoke' or 'to unite'. The practice of Yoga leads to the union of individual consciousness with that of the universal consciousness. It is about the harmony between the mind and body, man & nature.
The eight limbs of yoga is Patanjali's classification of classical yoga, as set out in his Yoga Sutras. He defined the eight limbs as yamas.
I look forward to sharing more information about the eight limbs of yoga and the important role they play in my plus-size yoga journey.
Yoga is a spiritual journey. Yoga is for every body.
